Ignition Interlock Program
New York drivers who have lost their driving privilege due to an alcohol-related arrest may be allowed to obtain a limited driving privilege with an approved ignition interlock device installed. The State of New York has designated the Lifesafer Ignition Interlock Unit as an approved ignition interlock device. DriveSafe Ignition Interlock of New York, Inc. is a provider of the Lifesafer Interlock in New York State.
Properties of the Draeger Interlock
• Prevents the starting of the vehicle when alcohol is detected in the driver’s breath.
• Leads to immediate separation of alcohol intake and driving
• Prevents accidents
• Is resistant to tampering
• Random rolling retest
• Records all events in data storage for later review.
• Increases safety for drivers and passengers.
Vehicle Requirements
The vehicle intended to be used with an ignition interlock must be in good working order. If the vehicle is owned in part by someone else prior, written consent must be obtained to use the vehicle. All persons using the ignition interlock equipped vehicle must be trained in the use of the device. All activities logged by the device will be attributed to the person contracted for the ignition interlock device.
What Does it Cost?
The ignition interlock program is quite economical at approximately $3.16 per day, a small price for a driving privilege.
Currently, the fee schedule** as of January 1st 2013 is:
Installation Charge $95.00
Monthly Service/Rental Charge $110.47
Security Deposit NONE
Device Removal Fee $65.00
How is the Program Enforced?
After approval and installation of the ignition interlock, persons are required to have the device serviced or monitored every 28 to 56 days. All uses of the vehicle are recorded by the device including any attempted circumvention. DriveSafe will report the device’s usage to the appropriate authorities for review.
The device is programmed to “lock out” or “prevent starting” of the vehicle if certain activities are detected. Attempting to start the vehicle with a breath alcohol level above the set point will cause a temporary lockout of the vehicle and will be noted in the monitoring report as a violation. Once the vehicle is in operation there will be a series of random running retests which will require the driver to blow into the device. If, during a running retest the required test is not taken, or alcohol is detected above the set point, a violation will be recorded and an alarm horn will sound until the vehicle is stopped. Any attempt to disconnect the ignition interlock or otherwise tamper with the device will be recorded and reported to the appropriate authorities. Any 1 violation within a monthly monitoring period will cause the device to enter into a reset mode, which gives the client 3 days to get service by a technician. A violation reset fee of $65.00 will then be charged. These activities may lead to a cancellation of the restricted driving privilege.
Service
The interlock device will be serviced every 28 to 56 days as required by the monitoring agency.
Monthly down loading of the interlock only takes about 5 min. Installation of the interlock takes about 2.0 to32.0 hrs depending on vehicle type. Monthly down load takes approx. 5 minutes.
